Beyond the Diagnosis : Thyroid Dysfunction, Thyroid Nodules, and Osteoporosis and Low Bone Mass

Chavurah Beth Shalom is pleased to launch a special Health Seminar series featuring experts within our own community that we expect will cover a variety of health topics. Immediately following Morning Shabbat Service, this Saturday, October 13th at 11 a.m, Dr Donald Bergman, MD, FACP, MACE, will speak about Thyroid Dysfunction, Thyroid Nodules and Osteoporosis with Low Bone Mass. The seminar will run approximately one hour and will include Dr. Bergman’s presentation followed up by an interactive question and answer session.

About Our Guest Speaker:

Donald A. Bergman, MD, FACP, MACE , is in private practice in New York City and board certified in both internal medicine and endocrinology and metabolism. He has been Clinical Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City since 2004 and previously has held other academic positions since 1977. Dr. Bergman has authored numerous papers and contributed to several books including “The Mount Sinai School of Medicine Complete Book of Nutrition.” He co-edited the “Power of Prevention Guide to Physical Activity”, which was t published by AACE in the summer of 2006. He is contributing editor of “The Complete Guide to Lifelong Nutrition” published by the American College of Endocrinology.
A graduate of Dartmouth College and Jefferson Medical School, Dr. Bergman completed his medical residency and endocrine fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He also completed an internship in obstetrics and gynecology at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Bergman was the President of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists from 2003 to 2004 and the President of the American College of Endocrinology from 2006 to 2007. He is currently the President of the Mount Sinai Alumni Association and the American College of Endocrinology Foundation.
He has served on the AACE Steering Committee, which established the association in 1991. He has also served as Chair of the Clinical Practice, Clinical Symposium, State Chapters, Finance, and Corporate Advisory Board committees, co-chair of two annual meetings, and has served as a member of numerous other committees.
During his presidency he began the Power of Prevention program (now known as EmPower) which encourages people to partner with their physicians in establishing healthy lifestyles and preventing illness. Part of this program is dedicated to eliminating childhood obesity. Dr, Bergman, and his wife, Susan, are founding members of Chavurah Beth Shalom.

7:30 pm : Kol Nidre / Eve of Yom Kippur.
The Kol Nidre will be played by cellist Madeleine Golz and harpist Karen Stern Norrell and prayers by Rabbi Benjamin. Sermon by Rabbi Bemporad.
WEDNESDAY , SEPTEMBER 19: Tickets are required.
10:00 am: Yom Kippur Morning Service. Led by Rabbi Benjamin and Rabbi Bemporad.
2:00 pm: Yom Kippur Family Service. Led by Rabbi Nat Benjamin and Rabbi Steve Meltz , our Children’s Services will teach our youngest members about Yom Kippur and will recite a few prayers as well as give each child the opportunity to blow the Shofar and learn of its meaning.
A special short film, The Brave Little Boat, will be shown to our children and their families. This is an exclusive showing for our Chavurah Beth Shalom families and is written and produced by Stephen Ollendorff / The Ollendorff Center For Human and Religious Understanding and a founding member of our Chavurah.
3:00 pm: Yom Kippur Afternoon Service and Yizkor led by Rabbi Benjamin and sermon by Rabbi Bemporad.
